::(3.5 stars) With all of Asia’s various cuisines on offer in Sydney, by the third week on an island I tend to start craving stronger flavours. We went to the slightly dodgy looking Si Chuan Restaurant and Takeaway on the hunt for chilli. After photographing the amazing strands of chillies at the markets, it surprises me that so few restaurants here (Thai Cuisine a notable exception) are using them. Si Chuan however will give you a steaming bowl of sliced beef in chilli oil (2000VT). Hallelujah. It contains plenty of the ubiquitous bok choy, making ordering vegetables with garlic (700VT) rather redundant. But gee how good is garlic now on my fully reset resort food palate! Chilli prawns (2000VT) were less exciting than the crisp red, yellow and green baby capsicums they were tossed in the wok with. A generous, steaming mound of Si Chuan fried rice (700VT) rounded out our meal in the dimly lit, dusty dining room. It’s decorated with optimistic postage stamp style pictures of roasted duck and ‘crad’ with curry sauce. The food however was tasty!

::Decent Chinese restaurant next to Espiritu Hotel. Service is fast and each dish is pretty massive. I ordered ginger prawns, garlic vegetables, and black bean fish fillet.

::The shining beacon of hope in Santo if you're looking for some good ethnic food. A lot of the food on Santo tends to be a little bland or basic and quite expensive. This restaurant is reasonably priced and has a range of Chinese dishes. The beef here is local and delicious.
